Embracing Curiosity: A Journey Through Sandra Cattaneo Adorno's Artistic Experimentations
In our latest episode of Photo Country, we had the pleasure of hosting Sandra Cattaneo Adorno, the Italian photographer and artist whose experimental approach to photography is both inspiring and captivating. Sandra's story is a testament to art's boundless possibilities and the joy of curiosity.
So, I'm not trained. I'm just a wandering eye around and looking at things and being happy. That's it. I'm very happy doing it. It's something that opened up my life. It helped me a lot, gave me a lot of happiness, and, it's not like a homework, because as I'm an older person, I don't rely on photography for living also. So it's an easier way of taking photo. It's an photography for fun.
A Creative Evolution
Sandra's journey into the world of photography began later in life, not as a career but as an exploration and a source of happiness. Without formal training, she embraced the freedom to experiment, not burdened by pressure to earn a living through her art. This freedom allowed her creativity to flourish, leading to a style that is vivid in its abstraction and compelling in its simplicity.
I wasn't looking. I was just passing.
Innovative Approaches to Photography
Sandra is renowned for her innovative techniques, particularly her work with metallic inks and contrasting colors, which she showcased in her latest exhibition, "A Slice of Venice Shimmering in Blue and Silver" at the Venice Biennale. She employed silver ink on dark blue paper—a distinct departure from her previous work with gold ink on black paper. This subtle shift resulted in a refreshing monochromatic look that plays with reflections and viewer perspectives, delivering an entirely different experience with each angle from which it's viewed.
Stripping Down to Essentials
For Sandra, the purpose of her experimentations is to strip photography to its essence. Her art captures the world in abstract forms, eliminating the distractions of detail and color to present a stark, often silhouetted essence of her subjects. This approach challenges traditional expectations and invites viewers to perceive and interpret photographs in novel ways.
I want to train my eye. I don't want to get new cameras.
The Joy of Experimentation
Photography, for Sandra, is a joyful exploration rather than a technical exercise. Her philosophy—focusing on seeing rather than having the latest equipment—reminds aspiring photographers to value their vision over their tools. It’s a message of innovation: to nurture curiosity and allow it to guide you in finding new ways to express your artistry.
From Painterly Inspiration to Photographic Realization
Sandra draws significant inspiration from various art forms, including painting. The play of light and shadow in Impressionist paintings, for instance, significantly influences Sandra's work, demonstrating that cross-discipline exploration can be a powerful tool for photographic creativity.
Artistic Legacy and Future Endeavours
While Sandra's works are admired and studied for their distinctive perspectives, she remains committed to exploring new creative avenues. Her dedication to continuous experimentation ensures that each project is as unique and thought-provoking as the ones before it. Sandra's process encourages us to remain curious and to never shy away from experimenting, regardless of where we are on our artistic journey.
Sandra Cattaneo Adorno's work is a testament to how photography can be a delightful journey of its own, continually evolving and enriching both the artist and the observer. Her prints are available through the Robert Mann Gallery in New York, for those interested in owning a piece of her exploratory vision.
