A Heart for Art with Dr. Howard Grill - Ep. 62

A retired interventional cardiologist from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

A Heart for Art: Dr. Howard Grill on Medicine, Abstract Photography, and Act Two

What happens when a lifetime spent inside operating rooms gives way to a canvas and a camera lens? On Episode 62 of the Photo Country Podcast, host Rajeev Nedumaran chats with Dr. Howard Grill, a retired interventional cardiologist based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, who is currently living out a vibrant “Act Two”.

Howard’s connection to photography began in grade school darkrooms, where the chemistry of image-making sparked an early interest in science. Though medicine eventually took center stage, his passion for visual creation never faded. Today, Howard blends fine art photography with abstract painting, utilizing techniques like multiple exposures, alternative lenses, and Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) to turn everyday subjects into striking works of art.

The Healing Power of Creation

During the episode, Howard and Rajeev reflect on the therapeutic qualities of art. Howard notes that the physical and mental health benefits extend beyond the artist:

"There have actually been a number of studies looking at hospital patients with art in the room... people recovered faster, had less hospitalization, and experienced less postoperative pain than those without."

This connection between art and medicine inspired one of Howard's favorite projects: a hospital installation where he photographed patients and recorded audio stories detailing parts of their lives doctors rarely get to see—from a guard at the Nuremberg trials to a Korean War veteran.

Pushing Past Imposter Syndrome

Transitioning into abstract painting and sharing creative videos on social media wasn’t without its hesitation. Howard candidly discusses overcoming imposter syndrome—a feeling common among artists at any stage. His takeaway is straightforward: if you create something you love, there is bound to be someone else in the world who connects with it too, but they won’t see it unless you put it out there.

Whether you are looking to try in-camera multiple exposures or seeking inspiration for your own creative second act, this conversation offers an uplifting perspective on the intersection of medicine, art, and lifelong curiosity.
